A random thought occurred to me while watching this episode. You know when Aang is at school and they have that pop quiz thing that talks about how Sozin fought airbender armies, or whatever? Well, Aang says there were no airbender armies, and the woman responds with a statement that basically says "how do you know? You weren't there". And then Aang goes all sheepish, etc, and sits down.
The thing is, though, Aang wasn't there 100 years ago. He was trapped in the iceberg by that point, so how does he know if there were airbender armies suddenly put together to fight off the firebenders or not?
Now I doubt that there was an official airbender army, but that's not to say it's entirely impossible that some of the airbenders decided they weren't going to take death sitting down. We know that Gyatso wasn't afraid to fight them off, considering all those bodies that surrounded him, and I have a feeling that others probably tried to make the attempt as well.
Of course, this doesn't really mean much either way. Regardless of whether there was an army or not, it would have only been created because the airbenders got wind of what the Fire Nation was planning to do to them, and nothing can excuse that extreme level of genocide. This was more just a random thought that occurred to me, as Aang was so insistent in thinking that he knew what had happened during that battle, when really he is just as clueless as everyone else.
