Kim and I want to expand The Writer's Circle to include a discussion group format with live chat. It will be structured like an actual writer's group with...
The format of the live chats (writer's circle) will depend on the number of participants; however, since we anticipate a smaller group, the basics of the structure will be something like this:
Remember, nothing is set in stone. This is just a very general concept Kim and I started spit-balling the other day. We are more than open for discussion. We encourage it, in fact. So let us know on here if you are interested and what sort of support system you'd like to see implemented. Suggestions?
It should be noted that this board will be private and only accessed with a password, which will be PM'd to the participants. We only encourage those who are serious about writing original work in the very immediate future to join. We will still be hosting more Writing Workshops in the future, which can be used by those who are still only interested in writing fanfiction.
- Weekly or bi-weekly (as in once every other week) discussions.
- Homework, which will include setting goals and writing short reviews for others' works when discussed.
- Live chat, via Skype or a chatroom like Chatzy.
- Resources geared towards writing and publishing original work.
- Personal threads dedicated to the authors original works, which will include a brief summary of what their story is about (genres, categories, etc) at the top.
The format of the live chats (writer's circle) will depend on the number of participants; however, since we anticipate a smaller group, the basics of the structure will be something like this:
- Before we begin critiquing each other's work, we will spend a few chats getting to know each other's interests, how far along we are in our planning and writing stages, what type of novels are being written and the audience they're geared towards, etc.
- At least one live chat will be solely dedicated to each member, whereby his/her work will be discussed in detail. (e.g. Week #2 - Kim.)
- The week before the scheduled chat, the selected author who is up for discussion will share an excerpt or chapter from his/her original story to be read and critiqued by the other members.
- Members will write a brief review of the excerpt, which will include their constructive criticism, and will not only discuss the work with the author but ask him/her questions. Think of it like a book review, but you get to ask the author questions about his/her work.
- The author must be prepared to field questions and take constructive criticism (it won't be mean).
- The discussion itself will last up to an hour and a copy of the written reviews will be given to the author at the end of the chat.
- Other live chats held may discuss several authors' works at once or other writing or publishing topics or simply be used as a free chat to discuss current goals, obstacles or engage in a Q&A.
